COURTYARD PREMIUM FRAGRANCE
Lavender, Oakmoss, Sandalwood, Coriander, Lime, Labdanum, Gardenia & More

NOT TO BE USED BY WOMEN WHO ARE PREGNANT OR NURSING.

Offered as a Premium 5 ml Fragrance for Spring 2012

Description: Courtyard is an all natural elegant sweet fougere blend consisting of the most exquisite Bulgarian Lavender Absolute which smells just like lavender buds and has no astringent or medicinal profile at all. It is blended with oakmoss absolute, organic coriander, fresh lime, white sandalwood, sandalwood, white waxy velvet gardenia petals, woody nagarmotha, sweet balsamic labdanum, peru balsam, yellow mandarin and sweet clover absolute in a rice bran oil base. The lavender absolute has the most incredible natural coumarin notes (reminiscent of sweet fresh hay, tonka beans and vanilla) that is enhanced by the addition of sweet clover absolute which also has a strong coumarin note. The gardenia is not a dominant or individually detectable note but it does enhance the sweetness of the lavender from its waxy-fatty floral scent while adding a green note to enhance the oakmoss' contribution (it is definitely missed if not added to this blend). The lime, coriander and mandarin are carefully and delicately added so that they serve to give a bit of brightness and lift to the blend, primarily noticeable on application. All of the wood notes add an earthy quality to the fragrance. The result of this note combination is a fragrance that is as cool and foresty as the Cascade of Gold fragrance is warm, humid and sensual. Courtyard is meant to evoke the image of a large stone fountain with water cascading down multiple tiers, in the middle of a splendid garden boasting an abundance of flowering lavender and gardenia bushes, liriope and a variety of ferns edging brick walkways and shaded by Grandaddy oaks heavy with the burden of Spanish moss.

The strongest note in the blend is the lavender absolute but your nose will pick up the soft harmony of other notes holding it up as the crowning jewel of the composition. It is very sweet, cool and delicately earthy with very soft hints of green, herbs, woods, lime and distant florals. Courtyard has incredible staying power and is strongly recommended if you even remotely enjoy lavender. It is an incredible treat before bed and layers nicely with Devil's Millhopper as well! The lavender used in this blend is not to be confused with the louder and more dominant lavender used in Quiet Night and Lavender Vanilla. This lavender is a demure, classy and elegant aristocrat draped in white flowing fabrics and twirling in the coolest shadows under an oak hammock, just barely missing the cool fountain spray carried on the light spring breeze. 100% pure essential oils, absolutes and attars.

Courtyard, like Cascade of Gold, is another strange concoction... a VERY good one.

Solstice Scents' description of this scent says it contains lavender (and several other lovely ingredients), and this nearly put me off from trying it because I hate anything with lavender. So, I was very pleasantly surprised when I tried out my sample and was... intrigued. I never smelled the lavender, not even after the drydown. In fact, I wasn't able to individually detect any of the wonderful ingredients it contains (thankfully, I'm not earning my living as a professional nose since I'd obviously starve), but I did find that the resulting blend is absolutely magnificent.

Courtyard smells clean, strong, and elegant. I think that this could be a unisex scent, like the ones in the Comme des Garcons line. I lust for this scent!

Courtyard smells completely gorgeous in the bottle. When I put it on, I mostly got the lime note. And then, ten minutes later, my skin just completely absorbed it and now I can't smell anything. Sad

The lavender, oakmoss, sandalwood and lime give Courtyard a pretty traditional men's cologne feel at first. The lavender is definitely the strongest note on me, as advertised, and it's a wonderfully creamy, sweet, cool sort of lavender (reminds me of bpal's Sleepy Moon). The sandalwood and oakmoss give it a hint of a darker, almost incensey edge, and the lime adds an extra, cheery sweetness (like happy key limes). I like it more in this stage than in the drydown. After about fifteen minutes, there's something warm and spicy about the scent that starts to smell like sharp cinnamon on my skin (at which point it kinda reminds me of potpourri) and something turns a bit sour.
It starts off a 10 out of 10 and dries down to about a 5 for me...

I had a similar experience to Little Bird with this: I liked it a lot at first, then not quite as much.

I don't wear fougeres often, but I certainly do appreciate them, and in the summer, I do sometimes wear them. So I was happy to get this in my sample pack though I didn't think I'd actually want a bottle.

I really like the opening. It is such a lovely fougere--and yes, a bit masculine. The lavender is gorgeous, btw, not too strong and astringent, but just lovely. The other notes, particularly lime/oakmoss give it a masculine edge.

I really like this wet. My complaint is that the lavender is not quite as strong as I would like in this, and oakmoss and coriander comes in a bit too strong after the initial dry down. I'm not a fan of coriander as a scent, unfortunately, so for me, this takes a turn I don't enjoy. I would have liked it if the lavender lingered longer.

As a mature male, fougeres are a very familiar fragrance group for me. Courtyard is Solstice Scents foray into this traditional male domain and it is done with great aplomb. As a Premium Fragrance, there are of course complexities and nuances that take this scent to a very sophisticated level and veer it into a more unisex direction. Traditionally the holy trinity of Fougeres has been a combination of Lavender, Oakmoss and Coumarin, with the Coumarin providing the sweetness. The specific lavender note chosen by Angela, combined with the sweetness of clover has enabled her to forgo the standard coumarin note as a separate ingredient. When first applied, the opening notes seem to have a 'brown' effect to me and not a classic 'green' one (the name 'Fougere' means 'fern' in French). It is from this that the lavender emerges during the first few minutes. Angela notes that she has used coriander, lime and mandarin to lift the fragrance and this makes a great deal of sense as it provides a sharpness that the fragrance might otherwise lack. The lavender selected is not particularly resinous one and is much softer that my usual preference, that is why I appreciate the lift from the other ingredients mentioned. I have to note a smoothness to this fragrance as it retreats into a more subtle skin scent which is probably attributable to the floral notes, though I agree they are not individually discernible. The balance between warm and cool is very well done. I personally prefer this worn with a heavy application, though I am sure many will not. I wish it had a longer opening duration on my skin, but again for those who enjoy subtle long lasting drydowns, this works well.

This is very light and would be completely inoffensive in an office setting.  It's airiness makes it great for hot weather as it never becomes oppressive or heavy.  However, I do wish it had a bit more undergirding it or grounding it because it does fade quickly (although I know that's one of the drawbacks of natural perfumes).

In the vial this is intense, sweet green, with a bit of lime. On skin it’s a mellower, but still green. Cool and green, with lime and something sweet and herbal (lavender). It smells like the lavender plant we have in a pot out back. I love the smell of real, fresh lavender, dirt and all, and this is that smell. This smells like a lush, green garden after a spring rain. I am a big fan.
