BASILICA
Labdanum, Vanilla, Frankincense, Rosewood, Myrrh, Hinoki Wood, Sandalwood and Galbanum

Offered as a Perfume Oil as part of the General Catalog

Description: The scent of grand and humbling mosaics, haunting pipe organ notes, polished pews, smoldering resins and reverence.

Smokey galbanum essential oil dissipates quickly after initial application leading into a rich dose of sweet, sticky labdanum resin. Crystals of frankincense illuminated in eerie multicolored light streaming through vintage stained glass windows emerges from the labdanum followed by exquisite polished rosewood and a combination of dark myrrh, soft exotic woods, a waft of heavenly vanilla absolute and fragrant ashes. A juxtaposition of dark resins and light golden balsamic and sweet vanilla notes, a metaphorical interpretation of a timeless inspiration.

Basilica is comprised of a rich labdanum absolute which smells of sweet, balsamic golden amber (a new amber to the shop), pure vanilla absolute, essential oils of frankincense, bright rosewood, myrrh, peru balsam, cistus, sandalwood, a few drops of galbanum and Virginia cedarwood and fragrance. Basilica is very resinous and dry with sweet elements, a definite morpher. The scent hugs close to the skin, much like Inquisitor, but smells....Divine.

Definitely one of my favorite SS creations of all time. It is absolutely beautiful. I had the pleasure of hiking the Kazbegi Mountains while in college and along our hike, our group came across a very small monastery in the mountains. The monks, speaking no English and us, speaking no Georgian, were invited in away from the chill and drizzle to have tea with them in their modest quarters. While I didn't smell any incense during this experience, this scent nevertheless reminds me very strongly of it. Upon first application, it smells foresty, perhaps from the hinoki wood. It slowly darkens and sweetens over time. If you want the experience of being in a cathedral in the middle of Siberia, then this is the scent for you. My only regret is that it doesn't seem to cling to my skin as long as some other scents do--I probably only get 3-4 hours out of this before it fades into a dusty, sweet smell. But I love this so much I don't mind re-applying again and again.

There are times when I just open the bottle and sniff just because it's so evocative and calming. Several folks have mentioned it's a perfect scent memory of a Catholic church and I completely agree. This is the lighter, more sacred fraternal twin to the dark and slightly menacing Inquisitor.

This is the perfect warm resin scent! Sometimes I find that resins and incenses go too powdery, but this stays nice and full.

It's really hard for me to describe exactly what Basilica smells like (amber, vanilla, frankincense, plus much more?), but it's one of my favorite SS scents. It doesn't last that long on me either, but the scent is incredible - this is truly a scent I wish I could bathe in. cat

Basilica is nice, but not one of my favorites. It turns a little too sweet on me, and almost smells honeyed. I smell a sweet, light sort of myrrh, smooth and light sandalwood, and a hint of something like pine (the cedar?) and honey. It's light and sweet for a resins & woods blend, where I seem to prefer darker & heavier resins.

This turns a little sweet on me too, I seem to be very good at amping sweetness amongst other things! It is a very nice resinous scent, just not quite heavy enough for me.

Basilica... now, this is me. Oh, yeah. Basilica on my skin is pure smoke, and I followed the smoke to
La Ermita de La Caridad del Cobre in Miami, Florida. Basilica is a visit to Yemaya. I walk inside this church by the Bay just to see the little virgin up on her pedestal, dressed in her finery, and surrounded by Teok Carrasco's powerful mural. Take me home, Basilica.

One of my all time favorites from SS and an all time favorite perfume. This and Astral Temple where what convinced me that SS was a perfume company I needed to pay attention to.

I love resins. Love them! And I like them to be true to the scent of real, burning resins, and this is! It has the gorgeous golden, almost citrus like note of frankincense resin burning--bright and lovely! The other resins are so well balanced, and then the amber pulls it all together so it is a wonderful golden scent, evocative and beautiful. One of my favorite interpretations of "church incense" that I've ever smelled.

And it lasts forever. I put it on at night, often, and when I wake up in the morning I can still smell it.

Bravo! sunny

This is a beautiful church incense scent that sadly is extremely close to my skin and doesn't last long on it either. It's really great while it lasts, however. Very peaceful and meditative.

While the opening contains a harmony of resins, sweet notes and ambers, it is the dry down that wins my heart. There is a darkness there - a wonderful enveloping, smoky depth that is both peaceful and turbulent at the same time. For me the warmth and peacefulness is supplied by the amber and the darkness by the smoky frankincense. The top notes do burn off quickly, probably a little too quickly, but what is left is very attractive. I do like this fragrance very thickly applied. It took me a while to understand this fragrance as I think I had been concentrating on the top notes, which interesting as they are, are merely the opening score of this gem.

The reviews I’ve read of Basilica associate the scent with churches. This doesn’t come through to me personally although it is a very quiet and calming scent. I can see how people feel this is a very grounding- it catches your attention and keeps it there.

Basilica is intriguing and complex in the vial and on skin. On first whiff I catch liquorices in a mix of layered, warm resins. Not spicy nor too incensey, rounded out at the edges. This doesn’t last very long on my skin- which is the only thing preventing me from buying a full-size bottle- it only sticks around for an hour or two. For those two hours, however, I constantly smell my wrist where I applied. The complexity of Basilica is difficult to describe beyond the peaceful feeling it invokes.

I love this. It reminded me of Scrying Smoke immediately (my favorite SS perfume). It's not exactly the same though this is darker? and I can smell the cedar. The dry down is closer to Scrying Smoke and the sillage is lower. Both are wonderful resiny perfumes and I feel you should try at least one. This is definitely going to replace Scrying Smoke for me (Scrying Smoke is being discontinued D:). I still prefer Scrying Smoke but this is almost as wonderful!

This one didn't work for my skin chemistry. The woods just went really sour and sickening, which is such a shame because I love that natural smell of woods. I ended up giving it to my mother, and it smells so nice one her. Not too overwhelming and just kinda sweet and spicy. If you are looking for an incense-type scent, I would not recommend this. If you are looking for sweet, deep woods, this is perfect.

This isn't a bad scent; in the vial it smells almost strong and peppery. On skin it's very burnt ash with vanilla, strong amber, and cedar wood primarily. I find that I really enjoy SS cedar! It does morph more than I'd like- the drydown is the same perfume, only I find it a little less intense...more of a campfire scent with a tad bit of vanilla. It smells less nondescript incensey and very much like a temple. I will get a lot of use, but I'm not sure if I love it enough to buy more!

I find the Basilica extrait to be sweetly resinous, with a hint of delicate woodsiness and an airy quality, as of bright light softly shining through the windows of the cathedral amid the polished wooden pews, beautiful and uplifting.  This is the cathedral a few hours before The Mass, or perhaps the day after, as one visits and prays quietly in the serenity.  It projects moderately for the first few hours and wears closer to the skin after that, and lasts all day as a skin scent.  This is a very nice representation of being in a cathedral.  Well done, Angela.  =)

Basilica is one of my enduring favorites from SS. It is so spot-on that it's like attending Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Love it.
